IQM – a global leader in building quantum computers

In just seven years, IQM Quantum Computers has grown into one of the world’s largest and most renowned quantum computing companies, with a mission to build world-leading quantum computers for the benefit of humankind. While operating globally, the company’s Nordic heritage has been instrumental in shaping an environment where brilliance thrives with minimal friction.

Why?

Driven by the ambition to create something unprecedented, the founders of IQM wanted to develop quantum computers to enable innovative breakthroughs for the benefit of humankind. As the complexity of today´s problems has grown almost out of proportion, conventional computers are simply no longer up to the most demanding tasks of processing it fast enough for the needs of industries such as pharma, logistics and finance.

Simultaneously, as AI and other emerging technologies gain popularity, the rapidly increasing demand for data centres and energy calls for innovative solutions – such as quantum computers where computing power scales exponentially – to operate in a more efficient manner.

What and how?

As a full-stack provider of quantum computing, IQM is capable of producing up to 20 quantum computers annually, addressing the growing demand for cutting-edge systems while ensuring scalability and adaptability through advanced in-house fabrication capabilities. Including tailored on-premises systems for a client range that reaches from universities to high-performance computing (HPC) centres, these hardware products are increasingly accessible through IQM’s own cloud offering also for enterprise customers. The computing power is provided by the company’s proprietary quantum data centres in Finland and Germany. Through strategic differentiators – such as proprietary chip technology and reliable deliveries –IQM is rapidly strengthening its position in the global market.

Growth and internationalisation

Headquartered in Finland with presence in Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Poland, Spain, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States, IQM is competing on a global level, guided by Nordic values. The company has successfully sold several systems in Europe and has made deliveries to the Asia-Pacific region. In addition, the first deal to the USA has also been announced.

Achieving global expansion from Europe is noteworthy and exceptional, as significant success stories often originate in the US. To make this a reality, IQM has already made significant investments in its production and assembly lines, and there are already further expansion plans to build momentum and prepare the company for strong growth.

The importance of venture capital

For IQM, the role of venture capital is existential. The company is working with deep technology and hardware – in other words, in a line of business which simply can’t be built without significant investment. An effective combination of public and private investment partners is essential.

Long-term partners such as Tesi, who have supported the company through various stages of growth – and are still contributing – have been extremely important. This kind of investment culture remains uncommon in Europe as few investors are willing to assume early-stage risks and continue supporting the company through subsequent growth phases. Tesi is a prime example of how to do this.

General information

IQM was founded in 2018 by a highly ambitious team of world-leading scientists having built several successful quantum labs and research centres globally. Today, IQM plays a crucial role in advancing the quantum ecosystem through scalable hardware, sophisticated software integration with high-performance computing (HPC), and focused application development.

The team’s pioneering work started with breakthroughs in qubit reset, readout, and thermal management towards large-scale quantum processors. Since then, the work has progressed to unique hardware advantages and novel concepts around quantum computing. The company’s vision is to build quantum computers with a profound impact on humanity.
