Finnish laser technology company Vexlum has announced EUR 10 million funding round to expand its semiconductor chip and laser production in Tampere. The round consists of EUR six million in equity financing, with participation from lead investor Kvanted as well as Tesi, and the European Innovation Council Fund (EIC Fund). In addition, Vexlum received a EUR 2.4 million grant from the EIC Accelerator and a EUR 1.6 million loan from Nordea. The funding in whole is set to be the largest seed round to date for a photonics company from the Nordics.
Vexlum develops semiconductor-based lasers that address a critical bottleneck in quantum computing and other photonics applications: the availability of compact, cost-effective, high-power laser sources at precise wavelengths. The company’s technology is used in quantum computers, atomic clocks, and other optical systems.
“Quantum computing and photonics-based solutions are growing rapidly, and Vexlum represents world-class expertise in these fields. Advanced lasers are enabling technologies for quantum technologies and, for instance, semiconductor manufacturing processes and optical communication technology. Vexlum has a strong team, a scalable and profitable business, and its own production facilities in Tampere. We see significant potential for international growth and are pleased to support the company on its journey to the next stage,” says Samppa Sirviö, Investment Manager at Tesi.
Through its investments, Tesi aims to foster competence clusters that drive new economic growth in Finland. The country has strong expertise in deep tech, with photonics being a particularly prominent area of specialization in the Tampere region.
